Music in the coffee shop

I was sitting at the first floor of the University library next to Java City(a coffee shop like Starbucks), reading and waiting for my senior project teammates to show up. Even though there was a glass wall between me and the Java City, I can hear the music that are coming from the coffee shop. The music was relaxing. I didn't know the names of the songs, but sounded to me relaxing and made me want to have a cup of coffee next door. I wonder if music plays a big role in attracting more customers to their place. Do you believe in music effect or the power of music? The music we are hearing from commercials or movies might have their own purposes.
If music is so powerful, how can I use music to align myself with the source then?
